CI.ASSIFII ns SELL PhoiM4lol Mountain Area Shows Increase In Weekly Wage Employment in North Carolina, covered hy the Employment Se curity Law, increased 31.12 per cent, or by nearly 150,000 workers in the seven year period from 1940 through 1947, while all non agricultural employment increased by nearly 250,000, it is shewn in a study by S. F. Campbell, di rector of the Bureau of Research and Statistics, and announced by Henry E. Kendall, Employment Security Commission chairman. The Mountain Region of the State, 25 counties, showed the greatest covered employment in crease in the seven years, 42.07 percent, considerably higher than the State average of 31.12 per cent, hut the wmge increases in this region increased to an aver age of only 11.19 percent, as com pared with the State average of 122.71 percent. Buncombe County, this report shows, increased its average em ployment from 10,170 in 1940 to 24,30.3 in 1947, a gain of 50.30 per cent. The county’s average weekly wage increased from $20.29 in 1940 to $39.93 in 1947, a gain of 96.80 percent. Brookside News By W. R. Stepp W. D. It has been reported here that Linwood Flack is in fair condition at a state hospital where he has been for several weeks. Hubert Crews was in Brookside Sunday, December 19. He is a nephew of Mrs. S. J. I-awton and was in the sendee for 5 years. * Mrs. William Lee of Union Mills, N. C. will make her home here with her sister, Mrs. Marg ret Long. Her son, Pete Ogden, left last week for New York city w here he resides. Miss LucileForney had as her guest Sunday her father and a brother-in-law of Ruthqrfordton, N. C. Mrs. S. J. Lawton is oh a weeks’ vacation. She has been wdth the Mountain Retreat Association for about 20 years. She will spend her vacation with her daughter Mrs. Howard Lytle.
